POZZOLAN MATERIALS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

LES POUZZOLANES EN TECHNIQUE ROUTIERE

The traditional use of volcanic pozzolan materials is based on their main properties. One of which, "the pozzolanic characteristic", has been fertilized on the preparation of pozzolan - lime mixtures used to stabilize gravel and form gravel-pozzolan mixtures. Judiciously prepared mixtures consisting of reactive pozzolan in the shape of sand and of fat lime, form slow setting binders which develop satisfactory adhesive properties in the presence of water. Gravel stabilized with these binders acquire good mechanical properties. This technique started to be used at the end of 1968. It is a simple and efficient technique, the success of which rests on the judicious selection of the aggregates, binder, mixing plant and compaction equipment.
