INFLUENCE OF THE VARIATIONS IN MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS ON THE QUALITY OF ROAD BASES STABILIZED WITH HYDRAULIC BINDERS
INFLUENCE DES VARIATIONS DES PROPRIETES MECHANIQUES SUR LA QUALITE DES COUCHES DE BASE TRAITES AUX LIANTS HYDRAULIQUES
A list is given of the possible modes of deterioration of A road base stabilized with hydraulic binders under the effect of traffic: failure through fatigue under repeated flexural stresses; deterioration at the upper surfacing/road base interface; deterioration at the level of shrinkage cracks; failure by buckling during a period of high temperature; loosening of the materials throughout due to immersion or subjection to freezing-thawing cycles. An attempt is made to determine the influence of the variations in the composition of gravel stabilized with hydraulic binders on the aptitude of the base to withstand the above types of deterioration. As regards deterioration due to fatigue caused by repeated flexural stresses, an attempt was made to quantitatively solve the problem in the case of a gravel-cement mixture by using a model pavement and simplifying hypotheses. It was shown that variations in composition lead to increases in the thickness in the order of 50%. Variations in composition existing on the construction site are classified in order of importance. A reduction in the deviations obtained during manufacture or laying can mean a marked increase in the lifetime of the road base. /TRRL/
