DETERMINATION OF THE REAL PERCENTAGE OF VOIDS IN BITUMINOUS MIXTURES
DETERMINATION DU POURCENTAGE REEL DE VIDES DANS LES ENROBES
The percentage of voids of bituminous mixtures has a marked influence on their characteristics behaviour and durability, but there exists some confusion concerning the methods of determining the real value of this percentage. The author gives different results concerning the absorption of aggregates, which were obtained with methods that produce errors reaching the limit set in standard specifications. The principles, on which these methods are based, are reexamined. Details are given of a technique utilizing paraffin ore, which seems to afford no difficulty and which gives the real value of the percentage of voids of A compacted bituminous mixture. Relations are established between particle size distribution, surface and number of constituents, and the bulk density of aggregates and their absorption characteristics. A further investigation is described into the absorption of bitumen as a function of temperature, viscosity and time for various types of aggregates. /TRRL/
