TESTING METHODS FOR CONCRETE DURABILITY

METHODS D'ESSAIS DE DURABILITE DU BETON

Test methods for measuring the progressive deterioration of concrete were studied. To this end, cement paste, mortar and concrete samples were subjected to wetting and drying cycles in sodium sulphate and pure water and to freezing-thawing cycles. The effects of those tests were studied by analyzing the variation in the weight of the samples, their length and flexural strength, variations in the time of ultrasonic wave propagation, by quantitative and qualitative optic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and x-rays. The results of the study show that the ultrasonic method can be utilized to detect local cracks at the initial stage. Among all the methods analyzed, that using the measurement of ultrasonic wave propagation time seems to be the best for characterizing the progressive deterioration of concrete. Measurements of flexural strength also showed the degree of corrosion. Weight measurements did not permit any observations of damages while length measurements were not always reliable. /TRRL/
