THE USE OF LIGNITE FLY-ASH IN THE MANUFACTURE OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES
PROBY ZASTOSOWANIA POPIOLOW LOTNYCH Z WEGLA BRUNATNEGO JAKO WYPELNIACZA DO MAS MINERALNO-BITUMICZNYCH ORAZ JAKO SRODKA ZWIEKSZAJACEGO PRZYCZEPNOSC BITUMU DO KRUSZYWA
Investigations are being carried out in an attempt to find out: (1) whether lignite fly-ash can be used as filler for bituminous mixtures; (2) whether these by-products can replace hydrated lime to increase the adhesion between bitumen and aggregates. A detailed description is given of the tests and results obtained. From the results, it is concluded that: (1) the addition of fly-ash to bitumen does not alter the binding properties of the latter; (2) the presence of fly-ash causes swelling of the bituminous mixture; (3) the prolonged action of water alters the physical and technical characteristics of fly-ash; (4) the use of fly-ash is not economical as it leads to an increase in the proportion of bituminous binder to be used. /TRRL/
