MACROSTRUCTURAL HYPOTHESIS ON THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE AND EXPERIMENTAL CONTROL
MAKROSTRUKTURNAYA GIBOTEZA PROCHNOSTI BETONA PRI SZHATTII I REZUL'TATY EE EHKSPERIMENTAL'NOJ PROVERKI
If, during single compression tests, the friction between the plates and the sample is eliminated, it is possible to show that cracks occur parallel to the direction of the stress applied. Failure takes place along vertical planes perpendicular to the cracks. The planes are planes of least resistance. They are determined with the help of a periodic geometric model (cubic system), assuming that the mortar is homogeneous and the load uniformly distributed. Observations on this model show that failure can occur in three modes: (1) splitting of the aggregate; (2) stripping of the aggregate; (3) failure of the mortar. A mathematical formula, containing coefficients which were experimentally determined, enables the simple compressive strength to be calculated as a function of simple tensile strength, adhesion and splitting tensile strength of the aggregate. This model can be used for an aggregate with a high young modulus and a large volume of aggregates, e.g. When the latter are close to each other. See also irrd abstract no. 101247.
