UNDERGROUND PARKING GARAGES

APARCAMIENTOS SUBTERRANEOS

Underground parking garages have been built in spanish towns only recently. The author considers the factors which determine whether underground parking garages should be constructed or not in large towns. It seems that the optimum number of parking places should be 60 to 80 per 2.47 acres in the centre of large towns and 80 to 120 places in medium-sized towns. A study is presented of cases in which the construction of underground parking garages is economically justifiable, and a comparison is made of mechanical installations and access ramps (calculated surcharges, gradients, constructional details, floors, ventilation and drainage). Various aspects of the operation, costs and economic efficiency of underground garages, e.g. Entry and exist controls, systems of detecting free places, personnel needed and protection against fire. /TRRL/
