THE PENETRATION INDEX OF THE BITUMINOUS BINDERS USED IN ARGENTINA
SOBRE EL INDICE DE PENETRACION DE LOS CEMENTOS ASFALTICOS ARGENTINOS
The penetration test (25 degrees c, 100 g, 5 s) has been used generally as the empirical method of measuring the consistency of bituminous binders and as a basis for distinguishing between various commercial types. There is however a tendency in certain centres to substitute viscosity measurements as, for example, in the usa asphalt institute. A study is made of the penetration index as comparative measurement of thermal sensitivity, by comparing the values obtained during two standardised tests: penetration and softening point (ring and ball) tests. The conclusions reached are as follows: it is necessary to determine penetration indices for two penetrations at different temperatures; in the bitumens studied, the penetration index can be accepted as measurement of consistency for moderate temperatures (20-40 degrees c) but it is not representative at mixing, spreading and compaction temperatures for mixtures of the asphaltic concrete type. /TRRL/
