DEMOLITION OF POST-TENSIONED CONCRETE
The author discusses the problem of the demolition of post-tensioned concrete, using as an example the demolition of nine prestressed concrete beams and the repair of others during the construction of bridges on the M3 motorway. In this example during prestressing operations on the first three of ten 3-span overbridges, constructed of post-tensioned segmental i-beams with composite prestressed deck slab, a series of cracks was detected at the intermediate diaphragms and following the line of the cable ducts. Radiographic tests showed some of the cable ducts to have displacements outside acceptable limits with the result that fully stressed and grouted parapet beams and internal beams had to be demolished. Details are given of the procedure used to remove the damaged beams, stressing cables and beam segments. /TRRL/
