PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS. 2 - A METHOD TO DESIGN CYCLE TIME FOR A SIGNAL-CONTROLLED PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
Due to the increase in pedestrian and vehicular traffic in built-up areas, it may be observed that vehicles are delayed for longer periods at zebra crossings. When such delays exceed certain acceptable values there arises a need for the conversion of such zebra crossings into signal-controlled pedestrian crossings. What should be the cycle time, and how should the right-of-way be distributed between vehicles and pedestrians? A method is suggested based on the principle of equal total delay costs for pedestrians and vehicles, with appropriate relative cost of delay for a vehicle and a pedestrian. (A).
