YOUR CITY - YOUR CHOICE. A PUBLIC OPINION SURVEY FOR SOUTHAMPTON CITY

Southampton City Council undertook an extensive public opinion survey on such issues as traffic restraint measures, new road construction, improvements to public transport and the relative priority of investment in alternative transport facilities. This article describes the care with which the questionnaires were framed, and comments on questionnaire comprehension, respondent characteristics and reliability. It appears that only a small minority of the public have sufficient understanding of the problems to formulate a meaningful transport policy of their own. It is suggested that public participation will be more effective if alternative overall packages of policies are presented, together with a simple description of how each package would affect everyday life. /TRRL/
