SIMULATION OF TRAFFIC FLOWS IN A ROAD NETWORK

This article outlines the philosophy, facilities and operation of an interactive road traffic model currently under development at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, and relates to a software model. The adoption of a software technique permits conversational and interactive working between the traffic engineer and a remote computer to which he is linked through the telephone network. The emphasis with this model is on simplicity of operation at minimal cost to the traffic engineer. For the most part, the model caters for small-scale configurations involving traffic situations which include road junctions, pedestrian crossings and car parks. The model will be useful to the practising road engineer with only a limited knowledge of computer programming to assist him in the design of traffic networks. /TRRL/
