COMPARATIVE STUDY OF LABORATORY METHODS OF DETERMINING THE PERMEABILITY OF CLAYS
SRAVNITEL'NAYA OTSENKA LABORATORNYKH METODOV OPREDELENIYA VODOPRONITSAEMOSTI GLIN
The authors determined the permeability coefficient k of two clay pastes (kaolinite and illite) under different conditions: (1) steady flow, (2) non-steady flow, (3) calculation of k from oedometer test results. A comparative study of the k value obtained with method (1) and (3) showed that the value of the experimental permeability coefficient is 10 to 100 times lower than the value obtained with method (3). Furthermore, a comparison of the permeability coefficients measured in steady and non-steady flow shows that there exists no agreement between these coefficients; this is thought to be due to the difference between the two flows. In conclusion, the authors advise not to use method (3) for the calculation of k coefficient. See irrd abstract no. 54845.
