EVOLUTION IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS AND FULL-DEPTH BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS
EVOLUCION DE LOS PAVIMENTOS FLEXIBLES. LOS PAVIMENTOS TOTALMENTE ASFALTICOS (P.T.A.)
One of the main conclusions derived from full-scale road tests such as the AASHO and the washo tests is that bituminous mixtures behave more satisfactorily if they are laid in thick courses. This led to a new concept for surfacings: the full-depth asphalt pavement consisting entirely of a high-quality bituminous mixture laid directly on the terrain or improved subgrade. A comparative study is presented of the economic aspects of this new type of construction as opposed to the cost of conventional pavements. It is concluded that both methods are comparable, with the full-depth pavement having a slight advantage over the other. Details are given of the problem of the design of full-depth asphalt pavements, calculation of their thickness and strengthening of the pavements. /TRRL/
