SAFETY FACTORS IN ROAD NETWORKS

FACTORES DE SEQURIDAD DE LOS SISTEMAS VIALES

In order to reduce accidents on the roads, the following conditions must be fulfilled: better education of road users, increased safety of the vehicle, adequate legislation, surveillance and maintenance of the network. In 75% cases, the accident is caused by the driver: excess speed, straddling of the opposite lane and lack of skill, defects in vision and slow reaction time being contributory factors. The authors recall that there exist three possible causes of accident: the road, the vehicle and the road user. The first factor is studied in detail, and from experiments carried out in various us states, accident indices are analyzed as a function of road characteristics, in particular widths of the lanes, carriageway markings, shoulders, central reserves, obstacles on the side of the road, alignment and lighting. /TRRL/
