APPLICATION OF AN OSMOTIC MODEL TO THE STUDY OF THE COMPRESSIBILITY AND SWELLING OF SATURATED CLAY
PRIMENENIE OSMOTICHESKOJ MODELI DLYA ISSLEDOVANIYA SZHIMAEMOSTI I NABUKHANIYA VODONASYSHCHHENNYKH GLIN
The standard mechanical model of saturated clay does not take into account the physico-chemical phenomena which occurs between solid and liquid phase. The author proposes a new osmotic model. This article describes the model and the hypotheses on which it is based. Using results of the study of the hydration and dehydration processes, it explains the consolidation and swelling mechanisms. Data obtained from the experimental investigation of these two phenomena show that: (1) the external pressure applied to the system cannot be divided into effective and interstitial pressure and that (2) contrary to what is stated in the standard theory, the consolidation process does not occur into two stages (primary and secondary) but in a single one.
