BRITTLE FRACTURE STRENGTH OF WELDED JOINTS
This article deals with those service conditions indicating the need to evaluate components, particularly pressure vessels, for susceptibility to brittle fracture. Emphasis is on welded vessels of ferritic structural steels. The fracture behaviour are state of stress, temperature and deformation rate; their effects are described and examples discussed. Suggestions are given on possible ways of reducing brittle fracture susceptibility. Often the usual notched-bar impact test no longer provides a satisfactory basis for assessing the brittle fracture safety of A structural member, notably in cases of heavy wall thickness and of high-tensile materials or welded joints. Hence possibilities and limitations of the most common brittle fracture tests are covered. References are made to newer concepts of lloyd's register, asme and iso. (A) /TRRL/
