QUICKLIME DRYS SITE QUAGMIRE
This article gives a brief account of the use of quicklime to de-water a water logged boulder clay site at Peterlee. Machinery already on site (elevating scraper and bulldozer) was used to push quicklime chippings into the moisture laden clay, and the resisting chemical reaction between the water and lime led to a visible improvement in stability within a few minutes. The use of chippings reduced the quantity of caustic dust and protective clothing was worn by the operators. It was found that the effect of further rain soaks could be dealt with by re-mixing the material by dozer to reactivate the quicklime. The operation was estimated to reduce waiting time from 7 to 10 days to only a few hours. Figures are given of the cost of the operation (which totalled found1,492) together with estimates of the cost of the delays that were avoided. It is reported that the system may not work on all types of water logged soils, but that it was certainly beneficial with the boulder clay at Peterlee. /TRRL/
