VICTORIA AVENUE IMPROVEMENT - STAGE II CARNARVON ROAD TO EAST STREET, SOUTHEND-ON-SEA
This article gives an account of the second stage of the Victoria Avenue improvement scheme which forms the terminal end of the southend arterial road. The author outlines the history of this road and discusses the scheme in general, with particular reference to the objections that have been received and the environmental features, which include the provision of public open spaces such as the extention of the Churchill Gardens and a degree of pedestrian segregation. Traffic figures and details of the design of the new carriageway are given. This consisted of a 152 mm hardcore sub-base obtained from the buildings that had been demolished, a continuously reinforced concrete base without expansion joints and a 200 mm hot rolled asphalt gravel aggregate wearing course with granite chippings. Data are presented on the kerbs used, the traffic signals and the street lighting. The article includes plans of the improvement and a series of photographs showing how the highway has been blended into the environment and designed to give an attractive entrance to the town. /TRRL/
