DETECTION OF OIL CONTAMINATION IN SEA WATER. VOLUME 1. EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS

An instrument for detecting oil or water contamination in fluids has been developed which is a splitbeam infrared absorption system, continuously monitors and permanently records contamination levels. The Maritime Administration was interested in a device that would measure the total oil contamination in shipboard water discharges. The device developed could then be used to enforce the Oil Pollution Act of 1962. The system could also monitor water contamination in oil. After an extensive literature search, infrared absorption was chosen as the optimum analytical technique. This particular detection system can easily be extended to analyze any fluid system; gas or liquid. Where a convenient wavelength window occurs, the system is designed for that window. If the window areas are widely separated in the infrared spectrum, the system can be further extended to a multi-contamination detection system.
