MEASUREMENTS OF THE ANGLE OF INTERPARTICLE FRICTION
The coefficient of interparticle friction is defined, and its theoretical basis and conventional methods of measurement are briefly introduced. A new apparatus, designed to measure the value of the coefficient of interparticle friction obtaining at a single particle-particle contact, is described with emphasis upon the materials examined, their preparation and data analysis. The reliability of the results obtained is seen to vary with both material and ambient testing conditions, demonstrating the dominating effect which the micro-topology and chemical condition of the surfaces at the contact point have on observed behaviour. A hypothesis is developed for the frictional behaviour of massive structured minerals to explain these observations and to discuss certain discrepancies with the data of other workers. It is concluded that 'single contact' behaviour is generally inapplicable to the shearing of a mass of particles of quartz, feldspar or glass ballotini, even when identical conditions appear to prevail, and only when the particle surfaces are both rough and water-saturated is there any justification for comparison. Consequently a method of measuring the coefficient of interparticle friction which itself employs a mass of sliding particles is preferred, so that a mean representative value may be obtained.
