TUNNELLING UNDER MANCHESTER
The article describes the methods used in the construction of the post office communication tunnel system between Manchester and Salford. The tunnel system, being built at a depth of 100-200 ft in bunter sandstone, is designed to connect a number of large diameter apparatus tunnels housing telecommunications equipment and support systems. Access to the concrete lined apparatus tunnels was provided by 23 ft and 18 ft diameter shafts lined with cast-iron bolted rings down to the sandstone level and below that with concrete.
