MEASURING BENDING MOMENTS
The article describes the design and application of the vibrating wire strain gauge designed at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory. Originally developed in 1958 as a single wire buried gauge for use in concrete roads and then in 1968 as a surface acoustic strain gauge for use in bridge structures, a twin wire surface gauge has now been developed which allows bending moments in shallow structural members to be measured. From the change in vibrating wire frequency, the strain change in the member can be deduced. It is proposed to use the double wire strain gauge for the measurement of strains in a thin steel experimental tunnel lining at the TRRL site at Chinnor. The gauges are to be installed as soon as possible after the 4mm thick tunnel lining has been erected so that the performance of the steel lining, shotcrete lining and rock bolt anchors can be compared with predicted values. /TRRL/
