THE PREDICTION OF TRAFFIC FLOW VOLUMES BASED ON SPECTRAL ANALYSIS
A method for the short-term prediction of traffic flow volumes based on the spectral analysis of time series is described. The technique would appear to have important application for the prediction of traffic flow with periodic behaviour which can be characterized in terms of the modal functions associated with a covariance data matrix. The method has been applied successfully to the prediction of traffic flow in the mersey queensway tunnel and reasonably accurate results have been obtained. The prediction algorithms can be adapted for continuous online implementation with applications to traffic control, and in particular could be incorporated into an integrated tunnel ventilation system. /TRRL/
