PARTIAL FACE PROTOTYPE AT STOKE-ON-TRENT
The article describes a partial face tunnelling machine developed by the Buchan Division of Leonard Fairclough for use on tunnels from 1.8-5.3m internal diameter, in hard and soft ground with strengths up to 70mn/sq.m. The tunnelling system is intended to drive horseshoe or circular shape tunnels with or without a shield, and is capable of being stripped down into components able to pass through a 1.2 X 0.9m air lock doorway. Field trials are described in which the machine was used to drive a 1.8m internal diameter sewer tunnel through a water bearing marl with a compressive strength of 15-20mn/sq.m. Due to space limitations "smoothvent" dowelled and bolted concrete ring segments were used for the tunnel lining. Further trials are to be carried out using the machine on a variety of tunnel sizes and ground conditions. /TRRL/
