BRIDGE AESTHETICS - A SOCIOLOGICAL APPROACH
A social survey was carried out to determine the preferences of three groups of people for certain bridge proportions. The sample consisted of a group of engineers, a group of architects, and thirdly a control group of philosophers. Their views were sought through a questionnaire, on the relative merits of relationships between bridge substructure and superstructure proportions called bridge shape parameters. By statistical analysis of the survey responses the most popular bridge shape parameters were determined. It was shown how social preferences may be found so that extra input information may be inserted into the bridge design process. /Author/TRRL/
