DEMOUNTABLE BONUS FOR CAR PARK SYSTEM
This article gives an account of car park system that has been developed by Dow-Mac Concrete, Robert Watson Co and Fram Gerrard which is reported to combine economy in cost, speed of erection, pleasant appearance and flexibility in use with the added bonus of demountability. The article commences by discussing the advantages of demountability and continues by describing the development of the system. It combines prestressed concrete double t-beams for the floors with uncased structural steel work beams and columns. Some detail (including photographs) is given of the erection of a park at Gartside Street in Manchester and of a new park in Warrington. Although it is underlined that the construction consortium do not place demountability at the top of their list of attributes, the article is mainly concerned with this feature. Only the brick stair wells need to be demolished in the traditional manner. The steel beams and columns are bolted together and the t-beams are welded together at ten points along their length. These joints can be burnt out should dismantling be necessary. The t-beams have a brush textured non-skid surface, avoiding the need for screeding. It is claimed that up to 2,400 square metres of floor area can be built in a week using this system. /TRRL/
