A STUDY OF CORROSION RATES IN AN OPERATING DESALTING PLANT
The Department of Interior, Office of Saline Water's one million gallons per day VTE/MSF desalination plant at Freeport, Texas was monitored with various portable and recording instantaneous corrosion rate devices. Corrosion rates on steel, low alloy steel, and copper alloys were determined under normal operating conditions, deliberate contamination with common sea water impurities, as well as under start up and shut down conditions. Results of the effects of changing operating or water chemistry variables such as dissolved oxygen content, pH, chlorine, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and chromate inhibition on corrosion rates are presented. While not a specific objective of the study, general corrosion rates of steel and copper alloys throughout the plant were reduced by a factor of two to four as the plant operators gained confidence in the ability of the corrosion rate monitoring equipment to detect water chemistry and operation upsets. These instruments were also useful in determining the occurrence and location of air inleakage.
