CERAMIC GAS TURBINES FOR IMPROVED SPECIFIC FUEL CONSUMPTION
The use of ceramics in gas turbines allows significantly higher inlet temperatures (2500 deg F) without the necessity of complex cooling designs. A review is presented of the present status of two turbines presently under the Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency sponsorship. The properties, costs, and required design considerations for ceramics are highlighted. Anticipated performance benefits are cited for both small and large turbines. (Authors)
