THE INFLUENCE OF INCREASING SIZE OF BULK CARRIERS ON THE PLANNING AND DESIGN OF PORT AND HARBOUR FACILITIES
The extent to which the present trend to the Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) affects the planning and design of port structures is described. How far the decisions for or against the construction of VLCC can be influenced by the additional investment and effort required for providing suitable and applicable port facilities is also expounded. Special importance is placed on the general layout of berths for VLCC, because only a well-balanced, technically practicable arrangement of the individual structures can fulfill the necessary prerequisites for safe berthing, lying and casting off of the ships. In this connection, mooring problems and related aspects are discussed, which should be taken into consideration by naval architects also in the design and equipment of crude oil tankers and other bulk carriers. Besides, problems are brought up, which arise especially in the design of fender structures, and for whose solution, the harbour construction engineer requires increasing co-operation with the naval architect.
