HANDLING OF LARGE SHIPS

In this paper a survey is given of the actions which have to be taken during each part of a ship's voyage; leaving the berth, leaving the harbour, sailing in the open ocean through constrained areas, approaching the harbour, sailing through inland waters and finally berthing. Specific attention will be paid to those actions which are required when large ships are involved. When increasing the ship's dimensions not only technical problems have to be overcome, but moreover problems involved in human engineering, since human aspects can play a very important role in the controllability of the ship and thus in her safety. Further, consideration is given to the aid which is provided from the shore to assist in the handling of the ships.
