THE INFLUENCE OF HARBOUR FACILITIES IN DESIGN AND SIZE OF LARGE TANKERS AND BULK CARRIERS
The rapid increase in size of tankers and bulk carriers following the growth in the volume of trade is nearing a peak. The limiting factors are: (a) slowing down of cost benefits for bigger sizes; (b) limited throughput of single harbours resulting in additional costs for large ships; and (c) physical limitations regarding access to ports requiring unreasonable expenses for their elimination. For ports allowing the access of ships up to about 200,000 dwt transhipment is a reasonable solution towards lower transportation costs; ports already suited to 250,000 dwt ships may benefit from ships with restricted draught. Optimization of the resulting "stubby" ships is a lasting process following stepwise extrapolation of previous experience due to the lack of systematic results covering the whole field of possible influences. Rapidly rising fuel costs suggest a solution of harbour problems: the medium sized, high powered nuclear tanker.
