Dramatic cuts in trip time during the late 1960s have been followed by consolidation as the groundwork is laid for another big jump in passenger train speeds toward the end of this decade. But promise and performance are sometimes hard to disentangle, so the author looks at today's schedules to see where 120 km/h start-to-stop speeds are actually being attained.
