PROSPECTING BY INFRA-RED TECHNIQUES
After summarizing the properties of infrared radiation, the author discusses methods of detecting and imaging different parts of the infrared spectrum, as follows: (a) detection of the near infrared (wavelength 0.5 to 1.35 microns), by special dye sensitised photographic emulsions. Mention is made of Kodak Ektachrome infrared aero film type 8443, frequently used in aerial surveys for archaeological studies and geological exploration. (b) detection of the thermal infrared (wavelength 8 to 14 microns), using special semiconductor detectors. Interpretation of both photographic infrared aero film and thermal infrared imagery in mineral exploration is discussed. It is concluded that, both photographic infrared, and thermal infrared techniques can, usefully be applied to mineral exploration, when operated under optimum conditions. /TRRL/
