NS SAVANNAH CONVERSION TO AN OCEAN SCIENCE SHIP: A FEASIBILITY STUDY

NS Savannah's endurance, size, speed, stability, living accommodations, power reserves, and public image offer opportunity for conversion to a regional ocean research ship for distant, lengthy research cruises. She could be a wide Area Fast Ocean Survey Ship for high-speed transoceanic bottom-mapping sonar, gravity, magnetic, and seismic projects. Another possibility is the Pelagic Zone University Laboratory. International and multi-agency oceanic programs are explored. Existing and proposed ocean science ships are compared. Operational considerations are reviewed and applications discussed. Navigation, data, research, survey, engineering, and ancillary systems are described. Shipyard work is examined. Budgetary costs are estimated and implementing action outlined. (Author)
