LIGHTWEIGHT EXPANDED CLAY AND SHALE AGGREGATES
LES GRANULATS LEGERS D'ARGILE ET DE SCHISTE EXPANSES
Details are given of the use and manufacture of lightweight expanded clay and shale aggregates. The formation of small cavities within the aggregates occurs between 1100 and 1200 degrees. This phenomenon is conditioned by the presence in the clay of mineral ingredients, which cause gaseous emissions at a temperature superior or equal to that of the melting of the clay and by the occurrence of a melting phase of sufficient viscosity to capture the gases emitted. Data are presented on the raw materials used in manufacture (mainly clay and shale) and the most satisfactory characteristics. The technological aspects of manufacture are described: preparation of the materials, drying, baking, together with the main characteristics: bulk density (250 to 900 kg/m3), water absorption coefficient (lower than 15%), chemical composition (the specification is being drafted and will limit the sulphur content). Research is being carried out to investigate methods of measuring the mechanical strength. The main uses are reviewed. /TRRL/
