REPAIR OF THE BAUMGARTEN BRIDGE AT POSTDAM

The baumgarten bridge is a three-span steel lattice girder bridge. It is statically determinate. In the centre span the lattice is placed above the carriageway and in the end spans below it. In january 1971 a diagonal of the lattice in the centre span was damaged by a vehicle. It was not possible to interrupt the traffic to repair the structure. It was equally impossible to support the span as the space had to remain free for the passage of ships. Two tensioned bars were placed on each side of the lattice in order to remove stresses from the deformed bar. The latter was then removed and replaced. After replacement of the defective bar, the tension bars were taken away. Traffic continued during the repair. /TRRL/
