ALTERNATIVE FUELS FOR SEA POWER

A review of the last major use of coal for marine purposes in the 1950s. Given the possibility that coal again became competitive as an energy source, proposals for a single coal-fired spreader boiler for a 250,000 tdw tanker are discussed and compared with a design for an existing 30,000 hp oil fired boiler. The paper also covers fluidized beds, liquid fuels and liquid/solid blends of fuel as well as current problems which must be solved before coal becomes an economic proposition.
