ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE SHIP MAINTENANCE FUNCTION
Results of an examination of data available from Matson Navigation Company, Sea-Land Services, Inc., and Pacific Coast Transport Company on maintenance policies and practices for merchant ships are provided. An examination is made of current policies and expenditures by ship operators for the maintenance function with a view toward a possible shift of shoreside maintenance actions to the ship, or vice versa. An analysis was also made of the economic effectiveness of preventive maintenance and found to be difficult to evaluate from available data and policies. Immediate development of an maintenance management system to generate the data necessary for development of economically efficient decision rules for maintenance management is recommended.
