ABRASION OF BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS BY STUDS
ABRIEB BITUMINOEGER FAHRBAHR DECKEN DURCH SPIKES
Measurements of the abrasion caused by studs on certain selected sections of road resulted in values of 3 - 7 mm with an upwards scatter. The amount of abrasion was markedly dependent on the aggregates, specific abrasion by studs increasing with the increasing percentage of sand used. The same trend was also observed in the voids content of the surfacings. Lateral displacement values were minimal, given that the surfacings had been down for two years. The accident rate of vehicles fitted with studded tyres corresponds to the proportion of those vehicles in all traffic (determined by acoustic traffic counts). /TRRL/
