TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN THE DARK, A LITERATURE REVIEW

About one-third of all police reported road traffic accidents in Sweden occur in the dark. In comparison with accidents in daylight, accidents in the dark are usually more severe and in relation to vehicle mileage more frequent. Therefore, it is not without cause that accidents in the dark attract attention in traffic safety research. The aim of the present study is to give a picture of the research which has been carried out on accidents in the dark, especially as regards the circumstances and situations in which the accidents occur and the relevant factors than involved. It is hoped that the study will help serve as a basis for future research in this field. The main source for the collection of material was IRRD which is a computerized information system containing references to literature and research projects in the road and traffic field. Different bibliographies as well as traffic and traffic safety journals have also been utilized and finally direct contact has been taken with traffic safety institutes in other countries.
