INFLUENCE OF HELICAL FLOW ON THE HYDRAULIC TRANSPORT CAPACITY OF SOLIDS THROUGH PIPES
A helical flow in dredge pipes shows a series of advantages such as augumentation and uniformity of the concentration of granular solid particles in the flow area, as well as reduction of the liquid/solid mixture velocity and of pipe wear. Starting from a calculation model an analytical approach is made to the effect of secondary flow on the increase of the transport capacity of solids through pipes. Our experiments on two liquid/solid mixtures in spiral flow through pipes of 100 mm diameter provide data with regard to the specific hydraulic parameters. A new practical solution for developing helical flow in dredge pipes is reported.
