THE PERFORMANCE AND THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF DREDGING EQUIPMENT
The paper endeavours to highlight, from a dredging contractor's point of view, the development of dredging equipment in the past and in the future, against the background of practical human experience and the needs of society. The history of dredging and dredging equipment as hitherto described by the industry needs re-evaluation of the source material. There is a distinct need for technological progress in equipment design, but sturdiness and versatility are of greater importance than vulnerable refinements. The greatest need, however, is that society as a whole reaps the necessary returns on its investments for dredging. The author briefly points out some recent developments in miniature as well as in "life-size' equipment, which are aimed at extending the working range of industry in the ocean, on the sea bottom, in restricted theatres of operation and by reduction of non-working hours caused by adverse weather conditions. Other conclusions are that realistic environmental requirements must be met from now on and spoil disposal will be controlled and improved.
