TRACKAGE RIGHTS: ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
Saving of costs is a basic reason for trackage rights but extension of market areas, better service to an existing market and other reasons must also be considered. A reduction of trackage need not mean a reduction in competition and efficiency. Trackage rights could help solve a number of industry problems. Shippers benefit from competitive service, railroads benefit from lower costs and the public benefits from a healthy railroad industry.
