CRUDE OIL PIPELINES AND VLCC PORTS
Oil pipelines can have a significant effect on tanker requirements, for example, by reducing the length of tanker hauls in the case of transit pipelines and by directing crude oil discharge terminals from one area to another in the case of distribution pipelines. The study analyses the present world-wide oil pipeline network, outlines planned developments and estimates the effect of pipelines on tanker requirements, from the point of view of aggregate tanker demand and the demand for particular ship types. The economics of pipeline and tanker transportation are compared, as well as their political pros and cons. The effect of pipelines on port developments are discussed, and an up-to-date listing of world-wide tanker port facilities is included.
