THE PHOSPHATE ROCK TRADES IN PERSPECTIVE
Trade in phosphate rock, which has reached 40 million tons annually, is characterized by low average transport distances, and bulk carriers - especially the larger units - still have a minor role. The preference for small ships is due to draft restrictions at loading, as well as discharging, ports, inadequate handling equipment and the lack of storage facilities and, through a close study of supply/demand, the report attempts to forcast the shipping requirements of the phosphate rock trades. The dominant end-use of phosphate rock is fertilizer and although demand is evolving in varying, and quite pronounced ways in different parts of the world, long-term trends will be discussed and analysed in order to forecast the position in the early 1980's. The supply pattern is also discussed, the forecast trade flows taking account of new mining developments and other factors likely to affect production and/or exports. The concluding section deals exhaustively with the shipping aspects of the trade.
