OFF-SHORE DRILLING RIGS
Fears of limited supplies of oil from traditional producing regions have led to a rapid expansion of off-shore exploration. As the frontiers of the search are pushed into ever-deeper waters, the demand for off-shore drilling rigs is increasing, both in number and in sophistication. The study lists the existing fleet of off-shore drilling rigs by type, builder and owner, as well as those on order. The main areas of off-shore exploration are examined and future demand for off-shore drilling rigs and the world-wide capacity to build them is discussed. Included is a discussion of the characteristics of different types of rig, their cost and the extent to which there is, or might in future be, a market for them, similar to the tanker market.
