INVESTIGATION OF THE ENDURANCE OF OLD TYRES

UNDERSOEKNING ROERANDE AELDRE DAECKUTRUSTNINGS HAALLBARHET

The purpose of this investigation was to study the durability of truck tyres about 20 years old for the Swedish Material Administration of the Armed Forces. Three tyres of the size 6.00-20 6 ply were run with constant speed and increasing load in a drum machine continuously for about 3 days. The tyres passed the test without running flat, but there was a widening of the small cracks present before the test. In two of the tyres the cracks, especially in the grooves of the tread, had grown so deep that the cord at some places was showing. /Author/TRRL/
