PARKING PROBLEMS IN CONJUNCTION WITH URBAN RENEWAL SCHEMES

This report describes an investigation into parking in conjunction with urban renewal schemes, conducted by interviews with residents and employees in four towns and by contacts with building authorities in towns of a certain size. Questions and answers were: are there any differences in car ownership between those living in old and new houses? 40% and 60% of households respectively. Is a parking space rented? There is greater willingness to rent by people in older houses. Do parking regulations on the street have any effect on renting of parking space? 39% of all who rented spaces in new houses lived on streets with no parking restrictions at night. How often is the car used, and has type of parking space any significance? No difference found; over 60% of cars in daily use. What are views on traffic environment in relation to street parking? Most had no views. Any arrangements for visitors? Most visitors park on street. What is the position for those working in the houses? Very few rent parking spaces, most have good free facilities. Building authorities were found to have a large variation in parking facility standards; all applying their own standards fell short of the requirements of the National Board of Urban Planning. /TRRL/
