STRATEGIC PLANNING IN A BULK SHIPPING COMPANY
Explores the requirements for consistent strategic decision-making in the highly volatile and purely competitive bulk shipping industry. The factors that influence the opportunities and constraints experienced by shipowners are discussed in some detail. On the basis of the present knowledge in the field of strategic planning, a system that takes account of the peculiarities of shipping is proposed and analyzed. To gain some understanding of the applicability of the system as suggested, an attempt was made to implement it on a Norwegian company. The case indicated that the exceptional uncertainties regarding future revenues inherent in the charter markets require rather qualitative approaches to the problem. After modification, the proposed system is capable of assisting decision-makers to align efforts in the desired direction, but not to anlayze the full implication of actions taken now on the future resource situation.
